“TRIM PROJECT ’24”

Some information about this past week with a Cal Fire/Gabilan crew.

  • 13    crew members: 1 Captain, 12 inmates
  • 2      OHNA volunteers
  • 118   hrs worked in 4.5 days
  • 8      important locations completed + other smaller ones
  • 3      street lights trimmed
  • 3+    tons of brush chipped
  • 2      large Cypress limbs cleared
  • 20    of 49 (41%) addresses were worked, the rest are minor problems.

RECAP:

The main objective was to clear limbs overhanging the curbs and streets causing problems to vehicles like garbage trucks, busses, mail trucks, and street cleaning.

Despite problems with the CAl Fire chipper (was fixed on Wednesday), logistical difficulties, and a short day Friday, we were able to accomplish all the major goals of the week. Most locations were trimmed as priorities dictated even though moving around the Community was time comsuming. There are some small cleanups we hope to take care of in the near future. We removed 3 dead Oaks that were hazardous…one big one in Acorn Park. Some fire mitigation work was done in one section.

All in all it was a successful week and the cooperation of our residents is greatly appreciated…as is the help of Ron Brown, who facilitated in the removal of brush and assisted in directing the crew in the multiple locations that were worked.

With an Oom Pah Band!

SUNDAY THE 3RD:

The sun came out on Little Acorn Park, Sunday the 3rd, where over 40 folks gathered to celebrate the 4TH of July. Many thanks to Connie Salmeri who supplied great decorations including red, white, and blue pinwheels showing the wind direction which caused a couple e-z-ups to need anchoring. Our local band “Danny and the Patriots” (aka the “Bad Boyz”) entertained while the Bounce Hose vacuumed the kids in. Many folks brought food supplanting hot dogs and beans which Connie and Tony brought. Louise Iredell was instrumental in making the day a success. Several members helped with the setup and take down of 6 e-z-ups, 15 tables, 75 chairs, and many decorations. Besides helping Sunday, on Saturday Grady Kincaid had attacked the weeds cleaning the area for the bounce house and 2 generators to safely operate. The meeting was short mostly updating members about Board activities. 3 folks won $50 prizes from the 50-50 raffle. It was great to see a few new families with young children attending. So glad we upgraded the equipment earlier this year. My personal thanks to all those who helped make the day such a success. Alex Rouch

NEW EQUIPMENT AT THE PARK:

Finally, on Feb. 26 we completed the upgrade to “Little Acorn Park”! It’s been a personal goal for a couple of years. The big swing set was fine for bigger kids but smaller ones didn’t have anything their size, but now they have a more challenging structure to exercise and dream on. The ‘Lifetime’ playset is the same as some of the wooden sets you’ve seen except now it’s made of steel and solid plastic and will last many years. The challenge was to bring the base up to the existing level. Fortunately for OHNA we have a resident who with his employer’s blessing provided about 20 cu. yds. of good clean soil, used a mini-excavator to level, a roller to compact, and the mini again to level the 16 cu. yds. of #2 sand we had delivered! The crew that put it all together were: Al, Dave, Ron, Scott, John, Ken, and Grady. They sounded like a bunch of kids playing! The total cost was $4623.00…not one dollar for labor!

You’re welcome. Alex Rouch

At the meeting held Aug. 19th, the OHNA Board of Directors voted unanimously to cancel plan for the picnic/meeting that was to be held Sep. 12th. Due to increasing difficulties with Covid 19, the Board acted with due care to prevent the possibility of presenting a situation of increased exposure. Hopefully a picnic event can be held next spring if the covid pandemic can be brought under control, at least in our County. A few days earlier the OHHA Board of Directors in the new section of Oak Hills also voted to cancel their picnic to be held Sept. 18th.

After being held back due to a Covid outbreak the expected Cal Fire crew from the Gabilan Camp was reassigned to fire duty. We’ll just have to wait and see what develops…rain will help.

At the Board meeting on the 15th planning for the Picnic/meeting continued. The plan is for a Santa Maria style BBQ but with a Carnival theme. Discussion was held regarding Covid concerns about pot luck foods or should the Assn. provide everything because of better sanitation control. As of now state and county guidelines are relaxed but the varient statistics are troubling.

If you or someone you know is willing to serve on the Board for their community, notify the President of your nomination. Guiding your Community can be a very rewarding experience, knowing you have made a contribution to your neighbors.
